One night Barnabé heads to a rendezvous. He leaves his car near a disused building and comes out with a briefcase. A man joins him and Barnabé hands him a briefcase containing gold bullion. The man hands him another briefcase, this one full of banknotes. After checking, Barnabé realizes he was duped—only the top of each bundle contains real banknotes. Barnabé sees with horror that the man is accompanied by an accomplice who emerges from the shadows. Barnabé is shot down. The murderers take the suitcases and leave the site, leaving the body of Inspector Barnabé for dead…
